People have become far more flexible about where they live and work. Unemployment, retirement, or starting a new career, are all reasons why people might have to move their car across the state. What options you choose will largely depend on how much time you have on your hands, how much money you have to spend and whether or not your car is up to a long journey.

Driving Miss Daisy

Your car might be a trusted friend, part of the family like Rover the dog or Kitty the cat. It might even be considered a collector’s item, be roadworthy, fully insured and road taxed. But can it withstand the rigours of a very long drive across the state?

If you haven’t driven a car on long journeys for some time, you might lack the confidence in negotiating fast road traffic, unfamiliar surroundings and map reading. Unless you have a kind neighbor, friend, nephew, or niece who will drive you to your retirement destination, you might like to think about hiring a car transport company, who will send a car carrier truck, load up your car and transport it safely to your new destination. Meanwhile you board your train, your coach or plane and take off in style, comfort and the knowledge that your “Miss Daisy” is in good hands.

Designated Driver

Some car transport companies offer driver services, where a member of their team will traverse the state in your car and deliver it to you at your new place of work or your new home. You will usually pay a deposit of ten percent or more by banker’s draft or in cash, when the driver collects the car or perhaps when you sign the contract. At the other end, when the car is delivered, you will pay the driver the balance, after you have made sure there is no damage. You will be asked to do a thorough inspection before the car is taken away and upon delivery. You should only part with money and sign the inspection report at the end, when you are happy that there is no damage and the job was done to your satisfaction.

While in transit and on the car carrier’s vehicle or on their premises, your car is insured with their own insurers. However, it is important to note that this is not the case for any personal belongings you might have left in the car. The car transport company rarely carries insurance for this type of belongings and will only insure your car, whilst it is in their care.

Car Carriers

This is a specially adapted vehicle – like a truck – which will have an auto-rack, closed or open containers holding up to ten cars at a time or more. Your car will usually be traveling by road on one of these trucks and the cheapest method is by open container. For classic or luxury cars it is recommended to use a closed container, but this service is more costly.
